The 73rd Special Feature of Electrochemistry
“Progress in aqueous-based batteries”
Electrochemistry Editorial Board
The Committee of Battery Technology
The Electrochemical Society of Japan
The effective utilization of electrical energy is an urgent issue, and rechargeable batteries as the power storage devices have various reaction systems. Lithium-ion batteries have been widely commercialized as high-energy-density batteries; however, since they use organic solvents as electrolytes, they present a significant safety concern. In recent years, there has been active research on all-solid-state batteries employing non-flammable inorganic solid electrolytes, but the ultimate non-flammable batteries are those that use aqueous electrolytes.
The Committee of Battery Technology will hold a workshop on aqueous batteries, mainly focusing on zinc-based systems (4th International Zinc and other Aqueous Batteries Workshop: 4th IZABW). In this context, we will publish a special issue titled Progress in aqueous-based batteries as a venue to share research findings on aqueous batteries.
This special issue welcomes research on all aspects of batteries using aqueous electrolytes. Contributions need not be limited to battery reactions but may also include a wide range of related topics, such as electrochemical reactions in aqueous electrolytes and the physicochemical properties of aqueous electrolytes. We strongly encourage you to submit your work.
Main Subjects and Categories
aqueous-based electrolyte, battery, rechargeable battery, electrochemical reaction, electrolyte solution, physicochemical properties, and other related topics

Article Processing Charge (APC)
The article processing charge (APC) is 150,000 yen (including VAT). However, members of the society are entitled to a 60% reduction of the article processing charge to 60,000 yen (including VAT). The Committee of Battery Technology will subsidize the APC for up to 5 cases for those who meet the following conditions, and the APC will be fully waivered. For more details, please contact the Secretariat of The Committee of Battery Technology (See below).
APC Supporting Conditions
・The author(s) of the manuscript must be part of the presenters at 4th IZABW. Receipt number of the presentation application or presentation number is required at the time of application for paper submission.
・The content of the manuscript must be based on the presentation at 4th IZABW. When submitting the manuscript, the author needs to indicate in the footnotes that it is related to the content of the presentation. APC waiver may not be granted for less relevant papers.
・The author who receives an APC waiver should indicate this in the Acknowledgments section.
Deadline
- Application for Submission: October 31, 2025 (Fri)
Please fill out and submit the designated site.
https://journal.electrochem.jp/sf73.html - Submission deadline: December 15, 2025 (Mon)
Please read the submission instructions carefully and submit your paper electronically from the designated site (https://www.editorialmanager.com/electrochemistry/). At the time of submission, please specify that the submission is for the 73rd Special feature on “Progress in aqueous-based batteries”. If you would like to receive an APC waiver for your paper related to 4th IZABW, please notify us with the corresponding appropriate receipt number on the presentation application or presentation number. Submissions may be accepted after the deadline if the maximum number of submissions is not reached. In that case, the Editorial Office will notify on the website of the Committee of Battery Technology and The Electrochemical Society of Japan. - Peer-reviewing
Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by two reviewers who are requested by the editorial board members, and the acceptance or rejection of the manuscript will be decided based on the results of the review. - Deadline for final version: April 15, 2026 (Wed)
This is the deadline for submission of accepted manuscripts for which APC payment has been confirmed. - Advanced online publication
Advanced online publication (AOP) will be performed in about 3 business days after the submission of the paper to the publisher. Please note that the AOP version will be Accepted Manuscript or Uncorrected Proof which the author’s proofreading will be done in parallel with the AOP procedure. - Paper publication
Normally the manuscript will be published in Vol. 94, No. 5, May 2026. The publication might be delayed depending on progress of peer review and revision. Early submission will be recommended as soon as possible.
